How to Cure Hiccups – Works Every Time!
Nothing more irritating than getting the hiccups and trying to function. You can’t tal… hiccup! …talk. And if you do try to talk you star… hiccup! …start giggling uncontrollably because when your mouth was ope… hiccup! …open you hiccuped REALLY LOUDLY. LOL!
What is a hiccup? KidsHealth Online explains a hiccup as when your diaphragm – a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of your chest – becomes irritated and spazzes. It pulls down which makes you suck air into your throat suddenly, which sounds like a hiccup as it passes your voice box.
What causes hiccups? The diaphragm becomes irritated after eating too quickly or too much. Hiccups can be caused by irritation in the stomach or the throat, or feeling nervous or excited.
How do I get rid of hiccups? Hiccups usually only last a few minutes, so you can just wait it out. Sometimes hiccups can last for days or weeks! That’s very unusual and it’s usually a sign of another medical problem. You should seek medical attention if you’ve had the hiccups for more than a day.
My favorite hiccup cure is this: Get something to drink (e.g., water, juice, soda). Take a deep breath and start drinking! Take 10 drinks without stopping or breathing. They don’t have to be huge gulps, just regular sips. Make sure to swallow fully each of the 10 times without stopping for a breath. If you have trouble doing this without breathing, you can plug your nose. When you’re done drinking, the hiccups will be gone!
Here are more ideas for How to Cure Hiccups:
- Have someone buy your hiccups. My great grandma used to do this, and it always worked on me. She’d offer me a quarter if I could hiccup again. Focusing on trying to hiccup makes you not be able to do it again!
- Hold your breath and count to 10
- Drink from the “wrong” side of a glass, upside down
- Put sugar under your tongue
- Have someone scare you unexpectedly
