Happy 50th Anniversary to my parents!!
They’re the most real couple I know. Their lives have been far from easy. Heck, where do you think I learned my frugality? I remember times being so hard they didn’t know where the next house payment would come from. But, when the going got tough my parents got going. They started selling things of value rather than ask for a handout. I’m talking about taking things they had that could be improved through hard work, and cashing in on them. They both always worked hard. I grew up on a farm in a small town. They both had jobs, or ran businesses, farmed and my dad played in a band. All to keep food on the table.
Despite lean times, we always had enough. I was the youngest of three and I never really knew money was tight. We had what was important. We had FUN. We had each other. We had love.
So, to my two favorite people in the world: I love you!! Happy Anniversary!
For my parents’ 25th anniversary, we threw a surprise party. This was no small feat in my hometown of around 1000 people, where my mom was postmaster! (Mailing the invites was especially challenging!) At that party, I stood in place of my dad in his band and sang this song:
“Could I Have this Dance” by Anne Murray
I’ll always remember the song they were playin’,
The first time we danced and I knew,
As we swayed to the music and held to each other,
I fell in love with you.Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we’re together, it feels so right.
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
And, lastly, another favorite of mine that is one that reminds me of of my mom and dad. They got married young, but they showed the naysayers… It looks like they made it. Look how far they’ve come. 🙂
“You’re Still The One” by Shania Twain
Looks like we made it
Look how far we’ve come my baby
We mighta took the long way
We knew we’d get there someday
They said, “I bet they’ll never make it”
But just look at us holding on
We’re still together still going strong
(You’re still the one)
You’re still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You’re still the one I want for life
(You’re still the one)
You’re still the one that I love
The only one I dream of
You’re still the one I kiss good night
