How to make Christmas Tree Yard Art from Wood Pallets

First, I was able to find free pallets at a local business. This makes all the difference, because if you have to pay for the pallets it will obviously cost more. However, paying a few bucks for a really nice pallet in good shape might be worth it to you, since they’ll last for years to come. I was lucky and found mine for free.

Second, I used a circular saw to cut the wood in a triangle. By cutting exactly like this, I was able to get two trees out of each pallet. Here’s the “pattern” I used:

Third, after cutting, I took the two end pieces and screwed them together to make the second tree (pictured below, right). I used long deck screws, so that they can withstand being outside. But, anything you have on hand will work in a pinch. Just make sure they’re long enough to go through to the second half. You’ll need at least 2″ or longer.

Fourth, I had green paint on hand from painting our dock a few summers ago. This just happened to be the perfect green color! But, you could leave the ‘trees’ natural wood color as well. Add decorations, and they’ll look great no matter what color they are. Because I had the paint on hand and used very little, I consider that not to be an expense either.

Fifth, I added garland and some battery operated Christmas tree lights. Of course, you could use real lights and plug them in, but given that I used these at an old school with no outside outlets, I just found it easier to go this route. I got the decorations at the thrift store, who donated them for free. You could use old decorations you have, or get crafty with the kids and make some new ones by stringing popcorn or cranberries. That’s going to attract birds and critters to your outdoor decorations, but that might be nice and entertaining.

Finally, I took one of the boards from the back of the tree which weren’t needed anymore, and screwed it to the bottom of the tree making a stand. With how much snow we have here, I really could have just stuck them in the snow and they would have stood up fine. But, if you need a stand, that’s an easy way to do it.

As you can see, my pallet Christmas trees came out great!
