Easy DIY Minion Halloween Costume {Free Printable Pattern}
If you love Universal Picture’s Minions, who originally debuted in Despicable Me, you will LOVE this super easy and fast do-it-yourself Halloween Minions costume!
I made Stuart, the one-eyed short minion with combed hair. I actually didn’t even bother with the hair, but you could easily draw it on with a Sharpie or similar permanent maker.
Stuart is playful, friendly, intelligent and funny. He is skillful at video games like his friend Dave. He can also be the most sincere and innocent out of all the minions. He seems to have a rebellious attitude too. He’s considered to be a slacker among the other Minions, preferring to chill out and play the ukulele than listen to the rules. Also, he was said to be always hungry in Minions, where he attempted to eat Kevin and Bob, able to think of them as bananas, and even wanted to eat a yellow fire hydrant in New York, also thinking it as a banana or food as well.
Pick YOUR favorite minion and make him! You will be surprised and proud of how easy it is, and how awesome it turns out!
Materials you’ll need:
COST BREAKDOWN: I made this for about $5 total using things I had already (and borrowed from my dad!) I literally could have made it for free (we had everything!) but I really wanted the yellow hardhat! lol
- Hard hat or baseball cap (preferably yellow). The minions actually wear MANY colors of hard hats. You could do almost any color and it would work! My dad had white hard hats I could have borrowed (he even said it was okay if I wanted to paint it yellow!), but since I found this awesome minion-yellow hardhat on Amazon for around $5, shipped free with Prime as an Add-on, I could not resist! I was surprised at how good the quality was too!
- Black electrical tape (for goggle band, we had some “in stock” at our house)
- 1 or 2 canning rings (also known as canning band or jarring band — the thing that screws onto the top of a canning jar to hold the lid on, we had these)
- Printed photo of minion’s eyes (I used my Epson Photo Printer, but you could print on any printer or have it printed very cheaply at your local store (e.g., Walgreens Photo or Walmart)
- Bib overalls (also borrowed from Dad!)
- Minion yellow t-shirt (borrowed from — you guessed it, Dad!)
- Work boots (optional, and we had these already)
How to make a Minion Halloween Costume
First, I made the hat. It took me about 3 minutes! Super fast and easy. 🙂 Remember, I made Stuart the Minion, who has one eye. If you’re making a minion with two eyes, use two canning rings and attach them to each other with black electrical tape first.
- First, print pictures of minion eyes (see patterns below).
- Now, using the canning ring as a guide, draw a circle guide of where you’ll cut out the eye
- Cut out eye to fit (you may need to trim it down more than your original drawn guide so it fits inside ring)
- Attach black electrical tape around one side of canning ring
- Position canning ring on the front of the hat, top-side facing out (top-side as it would be screwed on a jar)
- Unroll about 2′ of black electrical tape and carefully extend around hardhat to look like the band or strap for minion’s goggles
- Cut electrical tape and attach to other side of canning ring. Ring should be snug up against the hat
- Slide the eye cutout into ring – you’re done!
- As I mentioned, I didn’t bother with the hair. But, Stuart has combed hair so you could draw it on with a Sharpie or similar permanent marker. For minions with 3D hair, you could drill small holes in the hardhat and insert black bendable wire (also known as pipe cleaners or wire stems).
Now, get dressed in your minion clothes (bibs, yellow tshirt and boots), and you’re ready to go! 🙂
