Here’s how to make your own Scented Oil Plug-In Refills:
- Using an empty plug in, remove the wick in the stem using fingernails or tweezers, OR remove entire cap carefully
TIP: I used a flat head screwdriver to gently pry the cap off of the plug-in refill. Be careful not to damage it so that it will snap back in place when you’re done! - Rinse the bulb with tap water
- Refill with your choice of scented liquid. If using essential oil, fill about 1/3 full (20 drops) and then fill the rest with water. Or, fill with liquid simmering potpourri as I did in this example
- Replace wick in stem or cap with wick
- Insert plug-in into Plug-In unit and enjoy!
Using drops of essential oil and water tends to last longer – up to 4 weeks. Naturally, oil and water don’t mix well or stay mixed so you may need to swirl it around every few days to remix. If you choose liquid simmering potpourri – which is diluted already – it will stay mixed but refill will not last as long – up to 3 weeks.
Get Your Fill
You can find essential oils and liquid simmering potpourri in the candle and air freshener department at stores such as Walmart, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Linens N Things, Dollar Tree, CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid and more!
WARNING: When choosing your refill, please use common sense. Do not use flammable liquids! Check out eHow for a list of flammable household items. Also, wicks can wear over time. If they start to leak, discontinue use immediately so as not to cause a fire hazard. ~thanks fan, Nancy!
Time to Save
My Dollar Tree store had .25 oz bottles of essential oils for $1. Using about 20 drops of essential oils at this price will cost you approximately $0.33 per DIY refill that will last about a month.
Dollar Tree also had full-size liquid spray bottles (6 – 8 fl oz) on clearance for $0.25! I found bigger 32 fl oz bottles of liquid simmering potpourri at Walmart for around $3. And keep in mind, stores clear out their holiday-themed scents after holidays. You can get clearance prices up to 95% off if you time it right! This cheaper option may not have as strong of a scent, but for about a penny per refill it’s a great way to keep your house smelling great! If you snag your scents on clearance and pair with a coupon, you can score a lot for almost nothing. This would mean a penny or less per refill.
